Aston, Hrechka & Kunyk named KIJHL 3 Stars

 

 

Luke Aston (Revelstoke Grizzlies), Mikkel Hrechka (Revelstoke Grizzlies) and Nick Kunyk (Fernie Ghostriders) have been selected the Hudl Instat Kootenay International Junior Hockey League 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending April 1/24.

Aston – Top Forward – The St. Alberta, Alta., product had three goals and three assists in five games to help the Grizzlies advance to the KIJHL Teck Cup Final. In Game 4, Aston assisted on a goal to cut Princeton’s lead to 2-1, then scored the winning goal late in the third period. In Game 6, Aston scored the first goal, giving the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead 3:47 into the second period and in the deciding game of the series, Aston had a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win. He assisted on the opening goal by Ethan Coventry, assisted on a goal giving them a 3-2 lead and the insurance goal. Aston is third on the Grizzlies with 15 points in 15 games.

Hrechka – Top Defenceman – The Moose Jaw, Sask., product had a goal and five assists in five games for the Grizzlies. In Game 3, Hrechka had a goal and an assist, collecting a helper on Daniel Wittenberg’s goal to cut Princetonn’s lead to 2-1, then scored to give the Grizzlies a 3-2 lead in a 4-3 win. In Game 4, Hrechka assisted on Luke Aston’s winner in a 4-2 victory. He collected assists in overtime losses in Games 5 and 6. In Game 7, Hrechka assisted on the opening goal. Hrechka leads Grizzlies defencemen with 14 points in 14 games and is on a six-game point streak. It’s the second time that Hrechka has been named Top Defenceman.

Kunyk – Top Goalie – The Spruce Grove, Alta. product had two wins in three games to help the Ghostriders advance to the KIJHL Teck Cup Final. In Game 3 of the Kootenay Conference Final, Kunyk made 30 saves. He made 34 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Nitehawks in Game 5 and in Game 6, Kunyk had a 26-save shutout to clinch the series for the Ghostriders. In the three games combined, Kunyk saved 86 of 91 shots for a .945 save percentage and a 1.60 goals against average. In 10 Teck Cup playoff games, Kunyk is 8-1-0 with one shutout, a 1.50 GAA and a .949 SP.
