The Fernie Ghostriders Junior Hockey Club is seeking an energetic, committed, and highly organized Assistant Coach to join our hockey operations team for the upcoming season.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to work within a community-owned junior hockey organization committed to player development, community engagement, and competitive excellence both on and off the ice.
Position Summary
The Assistant Coach works directly alongside the Head Coach and General Manager in all aspects of hockey operations, supporting player development, team culture, daily operations, and community representation.This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a passion for mentoring young athletes.
Key Responsibilities
Hockey Operations
• Assist in recruitment, evaluation, and acquisition of players
• Support roster management, affiliate player development, and player communication year-round
• Attend approved camps and recruitment events
• Assist with Hockey Canada registration and player paperwork
• Support player transactions and related documentation
Player Development
• Assist with on-ice coaching, skill development, and team systems
• Support off-ice training, conditioning, and development programs
• Help ensure fair instruction and growth opportunities for all players
• Assist with individual player support and mentorship.
Team Operations
• Assist with dressing room management and equipment oversight
• Support game-day preparation and post-game responsibilities
• Assist with weekly scheduling and communication to players, billets, and team leadership
• Help coordinate travel logistics, accommodations, and team organization.
Player Supervision & Conduct
• Support team discipline standards on and off the ice
• Assist with curfew enforcement and player accountability
• Work collaboratively with billet families and team leadership to address player concerns
• Promote team culture aligned with club values and standards of conduct
Community Engagement
• Assist in organizing school visits, community appearances, and team volunteer initiatives
• Support player participation in community events and fundraisers
• Help strengthen relationships with local hockey organizations and schools
Administrative Support
• Attend executive meetings as required
• Assist with reports, communication, and operational planning
• Support budget-conscious decision making related to team operations
Qualifications
• Coaching experience in junior, minor, or high-performance hockey preferred
• Strong leadership and communication skills
• Ability to mentor and develop young athletes
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel extensively during the season
• Respect for confidentiality and professional standards
• Valid driver’s licence required
Compensation
• Salary commensurate with contract terms and experience
• Eligible for approved expense reimbursement

Term
• One-year contract with club option for renewal
