Rider News October 27/24

The Fernie Ghostriders Parents came to town for a two game weekend and spent their time scattered throughout the “Suds Section” where they cheered their boys on to convincing 9-1wins over both Quesnel and Williams Lake. Who knew hockey parents would hang out in the beer section.

With the wins the Riders now have a 5-2-1-1 record and the parents have headaches. Fernie is in 4th place but they have a .667 win %, same as the Rockies who play here next Saturday.

Notice the games played.

There were 583 and 605 fans at the games, those would be considered enviable numbers by any team in the KIJHL. The Ghostrider Coaches, Players and Board Members thank the fans for their support. Actually most KIJHL teams would die for those numbers…and the aforementioned beer sales.

FYI both  North Okanagan and Summerland didn’t have those numbers, or even close to them, and had to sell their franchises  to Quesnel and Williams Lake in the off season. That’s what can happen when you don’t have good fan support.

Anyway with 18 goals scored lets take a look at who took advantage of “Pad Your Stats” Weekend.

Coden Fournier

#21 Ben Skarsen 2 goals and 5 assists 7 pts.
#25 Taylor Haggerty 3 goals 3 assists 6 pts.
#16 Coden Fournier
 1 goal 4 assists 5 points
# 26 Colby Driebergen 3 goals

The rest of the scoring was spread out and almost every player had at least one point.

Fernie 9- Quesnel 1

Fernie 9 Williams Lake 1

Sawyer Samycia

The goal scorers were: Sawyer Samycia  Eric Martin,Taylor Haggerty, Lucas Desjarlais,  and Liam Breakenridge along with Colby Driebergen and Ben Skarsen with 2 each

Firsts

There were several “firsts” in the Q & WL games.

Dande Raposo

1/ Assistant Coach Dante Raposo got his first junior hockey win on the bench as a Head Coach while Chad Scharff was away coaching team Alberta in the U 16 WHL Cup. Raposo followed it up with another win Saturday. Congratulations to Coach Scharff who was one of the assistant coaches for Team Alberta who won the Cup. Full Story

2/  Sawyer Samycia is a 17 year old Fernie local, he scored his first goal and Braeden Jack another local had the assist, Samycia’s team mates swarmed him after the goal so he scored again on Saturday

3/ Lucas Desjarlais  who has had his share of chances this year got his first and second goal as well and D- man Kellen Hale had an assist on his first goal, it was Hale’s first point as a Rider.

4/ D man Stephen Jones got his first goal Friday, it was on a pass from a Quesnel D- man to one of his forwards that got deflected into his own net, then the goal scorer ran into his own goalie… you can’t make this stuff up. Jones was the last Rider to touch the puck so he got the goal and it was shorthanded as well. I wonder how many players in the world scored their first goal that way.

Liam Breakenridge

5/ Liam Breakenridge  scored his first on Saturday and it was also a shorthanded goal… and like the other first goal scorers he was swarmed by his teammates…which is a good thing… more than I can say for the Quesnel goalie who was knocked down twice by his own players… who just skated away. Team first stuff.

5/ Taylor Haggerty’s second goal Friday was a first because I’ve never seen anything like it. Just a second before he scored Coden Fournier tripped a Quesnel player who eventually crashed into his own net. The referee made the tripping call and the goal was allowed. Must be some new Western Canadian Development rule.

The Ghostriders play in Creston on Friday, the Cats surprised Kimberley when they scored in OT  to give the T-Cats 4-3 win in KD country.

Next Saturday Nov 2nd, the Rockies, who have become, for reasons both on and off the ice, one of the Riders most hated rivals, play here in Fernie. But first they  play a home and home with  Kimberley Tuesday and Friday…knock yourselves out boys.
