The Ghostriders lost both games this week, 3-2 in Kimberley and 6-5 at home in overtime against the Kamloops Storm.
In Kimberley the Riders had goals from Jack Lambert (Haggerty- Martin) and Riley Enns (Lambert) and Nick Kunyk was in net.
This game was lost on special teams. Both teams scored two power play goals but the Riders went 2-8 and Kimberley 2-3 on the PP. The shots were basically even at 26-25 FGR.
The Sommer brothers gave the Riders a couple of PP’s and got Eric Martin and Taylor Haggerty to take coincidental penalties with them. Good trades for the KD. Also goalie Marc Samyn was named the KD’s 2nd star and Taylor Haggerty the FGR Star..
Lots of scoring action in this game for the 690 fans that saw the Riders up 3-1 halfway through the second and 5-3 by the end of aforementioned frame. It was the proverbial snatched a defeat from the jaws of victory scenario.
The Riders had the edge in shots at 59-36 as well but goalie Dawson Holitzki was perfect in the third and OT.
Rider goals came from, Riley Enns, Ben Skarsen, Coden Fournier, Eric Martin 1G 2A and Luke Rothfos with Taylor Haggerty collecting 3A The game sheet doesn’t show it but Drew Cadenhead replaced Nick Kunyk after the third goal in the second period.
The game sheet also doesn’t show the Enns’ (photo) goal (his 6th in 7 games) was a PP goal and that Nick Kunyk who started the play with a long pass should have been given the second assist.
Ben Skarsen had 1G 2A Saturday and has had 3G and 5A in the five games he has played since coming back from the AJ. Skarsen took a few hits in the game when he didn’t have the puck including when the rather large trainer jumped out from the bench to attend to his fallen goalie who was knocked over when the Storm D-man pushed Fournier into his own goalie.
The what the (rhymes with truck) just hit me look on Skarsen’s (photo) face while he was sitting on the ice was amusing, but I don’t think either of them saw each other. As for Fournier…well hockey blood runs deep, and although pushed he didn’t exactly try and jump out of the way of the goalie either. Anyway Ryan Larsen got the OT PP game winner.
Head Coach and General Manager Chad Scharff (photo)will be away from the team next week. Scharff is part of the Alberta U 16 WHL Cup coaching staff in a tournament in Red Deer. Dante Raposo will be running the show until Scharff returns for the November 1&2nd games.
