Rider News November 10/24

After getting at least a point in their last five games the Ghostriders had a bit of set back losing 3-2 at home to Golden then 3-2 in Columbia Valley. To their credit the Riders had enough high % scoring chances to win both games and they went 2-7 on the power play (28%)… Most scientist’s I know (none) think that’s pretty good.

The one bright spot on the weekend was Ghostriders team Captain Taylor Haggerty who is now in his third year with the Riders. Haggerty played his 100th regular season game on Saturday in Invermere.

Taylor is a former Rookie of the Year, MVP, Top Scorer and Top Forward.  In his first year he scored 16 goals and had 41 points. In his second season and first as team Captain he scored 26 goals and 62 points. Now in his third year Haggerty has 9 goals and 24 points in 13 games… that puts him in a three way tie for third in KIJHL scoring.
Congratulations Taylor.

Golden 3 @ Fernie 2

Josh Kallies

Taylor Haggerty (Martin- Kallies) and Taylor Haggerty (Skarsen- Fournier) PP scored the Rider goals and Drew Cadenhead was in net. The assist on the first goal was Josh Kallies’ first point as a Rider. The shots were 51-23 Fernie but they weren’t all great chances, Golden also hit a couple of posts and their goalie Riley Deck was a game star.

Fernie 2 @ Columbia Valley 3

Braeden Jack (Johnson- Desjarlais) and Coden Fournier (Martin-Haggerty) on the PP scored the Rider goals. The Rockies game winner was from Ashton Sledz on the PP with just 18 seconds left in the game. Nick Kunyk was in the Rider net and the shots were 31-28 FGR.

With 2 goals and 5 assists in his last five games D-man Eric Martin now has 19 points and is tied with Nick Hughes (Kimberley) for first overall in KIJHL D-man scoring… but has played 4 less games.  Martin who is second in Ghostrider scoring was also named as one of three KIJHL Players of the Month of October. A great start for Martin who came to Fernie in November last year and took about two seconds to figure out the league and become a top scoring D.

Round’ the League

Fernie wasn’t the only team to lose a couple of games, Kimberley lost 10-1 in Beaver Valley then lost 7-6 (OT)  in Nelson…their new goalie Josh Hager wasn’t in the lineup and wasn’t listed as injured, but in this secretive league that’s not a surprise.

And Finally

The NCAA changed their eligibility rules last week and now CHL players can play for US College teams. We don’t know what these new rules will mean for the “Outlaw” BCHL who promotes themselves as the best way to get a US scholarship and or what it could mean for BC Hockey’s new Jr A Tier 1 league.

Regardless, the landscape changed for the better when the BCHL went Outlaw. Because of them the Jr A leagues got the Western Canada Development Model, most noticeable to the fans are the visor’s and less suspensions. If it wasn’t for the BCHL we would still be forced to wear cages and get suspended for smiling wrong.  This is a great thing for the players…now if we can just let the refs do both leagues.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from falling hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
