Rider News Nov 3/24

The Ghostriders won both of their games this week, 3-2 in Creston and 4-2 at home against the second place Rockies. Great divisional wins that pushed the Riders into a tie for second place with a .727 win %. The Orcs from Mordor have a .844 %… and their new goalie Josh Hager even scored a goal against Creston.

FGR Captain Taylor Haggerty

“That was a good 4 point divisional weekend for us. Lots of good things to build off of but we still think we can play better, and be more consistent over the course of a 60 minute game. It’s definitely nice to see things coming together with that being said”.

Fernie 3 @ Creston 2

Friday in Creston.  After playing five games in a row Nick Kunyk got the night off and Drew Cadenhead got the start in net, and he stopped  22 of 24 shots for his second win of the year, his first W was also in Creston last month.

The Riders pretty much controlled the Creston game even though the 3-2 score kinda hints at something else… but Creston named their goalie Brendan Smith as the first star… so there’s that. Ben Skarsen was named the 2nd star.

Colby Driebergen (Rothfos-Martin) Keegan Fellows (Jack- Dhillon) and Liam Breakenridge (Enns-North Peigan) scored the Rider goals and Breakenridge’s second of the season was the game winner.

Columbia Valley Rockies  2 @ Fernie Ghostriders 4

Nick Kunyk

The Rockies are one of the better teams Fernie has faced lately and they played like it… and they even had enough chances to win… but Nick Kunyk wasn’t having any of it and came up big stopping 32 shots, 3 power plays and in the third when the Rockies made their final push he was perfect.

Lots of scoring chances by both teams in the CVR game. The Riders scored the first goal when Nick Kunyk caught the CVR on a brutal line change and passed the puck up three lines  to Coden Fournier who passed it across to Ben Skarsen who passed  back across the net to Taylor Haggerty for the best goal of the weekend. We don’t see enough goals like that.

Riley Enns

The other goal scorers were Riley Enns with a pair, one a wrap around and then he converted a behind the net pass from Liam Breakenridge. Top scoring D-man Eric Martin’s 5th of the year from Haggerty and Fournier on the power play in the second period was the game winner.   CVR’s Ashton Sledz and Riley Enns were named as the stars. Fernie local Sawyer Samycia (07) was also noticeable in this game.

Head Coach Chad Scharff was in Red Deer last week where he was an assistant coach for the U16 WHL Cup team, here is what he had to say about that experience.

“The WHL Cup tournament was a great experience. It’s always nice when you set out to accomplish a goal in March and you see it come to reality with a Gold Medal. Really honoured to be apart of such an amazing group of players and the staff was incredible. I feel moving forward for me and returning to the Ghostriders I was able to learn new things from our Team AB staff and that’s the most important thing is to be a sponge and learn”.

“It’s my job now to come back to the Riders and continue to ride the momentum off a great weekend that they had. Coach Dante did a remarkable job with the week of preparation and executing in the games. I thank him for being so dedicated and professional in his approach. Now to keep charging forward and gaining points every weekend.”

The Great Bobby Knight “All of us learn to write in the second grade. Most of us go on to greater things” … I wonder what he meant by that.
